Hemodialysis Patients FAQs

QUESTIONS

Why use NutriRite™ IDPN?

ANSWERS

NutriRite™ Intradialytic Parenteral Nutrition (IDPN) helps replace the protein lost during dialysis and provides calories, protein, and other nutrients that your body needs every day for strength and energy.

What can be done to correct nutritional imbalances?

If nutritional imbalances are detected through weight loss or laboratory analysis of your blood, your physician may want to try dietary counseling or prescribed NutriRite™ IDPN to help meet your nutritional requirements.

How can three treatments weekly help renal patients’ nutritional status?

Parenteral nutrition helps to meet the nutritional requirements in patients who cannot maintain body weight and strength. Protein and calories provided by NutriRite™ IDPN when combined with an oral diet, help meet your nutritional goals.

What percentage of chronic hemodialysis patients require IDPN therapy?

Our experience indicated that approximately 10- 15% of chronic hemodialysis patients are in need of IDPN therapy and meet the acceptable criteria.

What can I expect from NutriRite™ IDPN?

You may experience an increase in appetite, renewed energy and strength, and even weight gain. This may not occur immediately and may take a few months of continuous use to become evident.

Why do dialysis patients need extra nutrition?

The process of dialysis causes the loss of needed vitamins and minerals, as well as the portion of the proteins and sugars that your body needs to build tissue and provide you with energy.

Many dialysis patients have problems eating and digesting food. Some patients, for example, lose their appetites and cannot eat enough to keep their weight and strength up.

Dialysis patients may have problems absorbing some nutrients because of other gastrointestinal illnesses, which can also lead to poor nutrition.

How will I receive my treatments?

Your NutriRite™ IDPN solutions are compounded by Patient Care America clinical pharmacists according to your doctor’s prescription. These solutions are delivered to the dialysis unit specifically for your use. The dialysis nurse will connect the NutriRite™ IDPN solution to your existing hemodialysis line. You will receive one NutriRite™ IDPN bag with each dialysis treatment.

How will your unit’s personnel become trained to administer NutriRite ™ IDPN?

An area Clinical Service Representative will be available to train the staff. In addition, our team of pharmacists, nurses, and dietitians are available by phone for consultation.

What is the average length of time a patient remains on NutriRite™ IDPN therapy?

The length of NutriRite™ IDPN therapy varies from patient to patient. It is dependent on individual nutritional goals, and the degree of malnutrition.

The physician and dialysis unit staff will determine when you have reached these goals. We suggest the patient be reevaluated every 3-6 months.

How much of the nutrients are dialyzed off during the hemodialysis run?

Amino Acids: Approximately 10%
Glucose: Minimal Amounts
Lipids: Minimal Amounts
